Project 2 Reflection

This project is about pss, i personal feel very interesting and challenge. The being i through this pss system is very interesting and fun but after many times try i feel very tired, i start feeling of very difficult, because the pss not only design a product also have to design a useful, workable system. The challenge is the system, how it going to work, help the environnent and meet the people’s need.


My understanding of product service system is a business model that offers service and product to address sustainability in production and consumption. this product service system have to reduce environmental impact that meet human’s need and change/increase benefit of target behaviour.


Our product service system is to reduce bottle water wast. We design a water station to encourage more people to use reusable water containers for daily use. We are trying to change their behaviour of using disposal water bottles because the research shows that disposal water bottles have great impact on the earth. With our pss people can refill their water bottle when they walk out for work, school or outdoor sports activities. Our pss product locate at the lobby which is beneficial to inform people to bring water with them every day an avoid buying bottle water. Our pss also design a rang of reusable bottle for user, the bottle have 3 type, one for adult, one for kids and one for whole family. they all come with different colour which is to meet different user’s preference.

The difficulty of this project is the linkage of product service system and product. Is very challenge that designing not just a pure product but product within a service system. The way that we find out is make sure the system is going to work and help the user first then we following the system to find out what product suit for the system. Frisly, we draw out a mind map see what kinds of opportunity we have to create a product service system. We want to focus on reduce bottle waste so we decide a system to tell user use less disposal water bottle and encourage them drink more pure water. Following that idea we design a water station to suit the system.


After this project i think industrial designers should consider product service system among their solution finding strategies because pss can reduce environmental impact and increase benefit for user. There for pss should consider more in the futures time.


The most that i like of designing a pss is the advantages that pss can help user and tell them what is right and valuable then change their bad consumption behaviors. The least i like about designing the pss is the disadvantage of pss that have to suit for every user and have to consider about the consumption, production and environnemental friendly. which is very difficult and challenge.


This project is a group work through this i learn how to work together with group members and we take the challenge and solve problems together. We discusses and analysais the pss opportunity and together design an suitable product for this pss. This exercise let me understand what is pss and the important of it for our society and we should use more pss on the future design to help environnent create a better life for users.

Assigment 2

Aqua water station


pss


The purpose of our pss is to reduce the bottle

waste

and encourage people use reusable bottle. Our PSS is

to provide the water station to the apartment that

more than 50 units. Our station not only provide

purified water to customer, but also provide the chill

water and ice to attract more customer to use our PSS.

The station sell the reusable and long lasting bottles

that has wide lid to allow user wash their bottle easily,

the bottle could put it into the dishwasher as well. Our

bottle looks unique and part of the purified water

station to tell the customer that drink healthy water,

use reusable bottle to help our environment.


The station is located at the lobby of the apartment.

Users use their Key card(the one that can open the main door to activate the machine, After the machine

recognize them, they can buy normal water,chilled water, ice and soda water from the machine. The prices depending on the demand, and will be charged

directly on the membership account. Users can log in

their account online and put money into the account.

Operator will check the machine monthly, sensors in

the filter and CO2 box will tell the company if the

filters and CO2 box need to be replaced.

Rationale:


Target market: Apartment with more than 50 units


Concept explanation:

The image of the machine is slim and clean. We want to make the machine take small place at the lobby and serves efficiently. The machine takes children, adult and disabled people into consideration. The reusable bottles and bulk water containers are in conjunction with our machine and have the clean feeling. Wide mouth will be beneficial for cleaning. The material for the bottles will be HDPE.


Benefits of PSS:

Reduce bottled water waste: The Aqua water station is to encourage more and more people use reusable water containers for daily water intake. As our research, disposal water bottles have great impact on the earth. With our PSS, people can refill their water bottle when they walk out for work, school or outdoor sports activities. Have the station located at the lobby is beneficial to inform people to bring water with them every day and avoid buying bottled water. People who don’t have a reusable bottle can buy our bottles at the station, or order n unique and stylish one at our website.


Reduce bulk water containers and filter waste: The Aqua water station not only encourage users using outdoor water containers, but also home purified water containers. As our research, some people buy bulk water from certain company and bring them home for daily drinking water. The reason is that they think it is healthier than drinking tap water. Some people may buy filters, but filters should be replaced 2-3months and the filter cause waste problems too. With our PSS, these problems can be solved. People who like buy bulk water can refill their water from our station, reducing the transportation and cost. People who buy filters home don’t need to buy filters anymore. They can just refill water and don’t need to care about the filters. Users can request a bulk water container from our website, it will be delivered to their home and they can start using it with their Key card.


We also provide ice and soda water at our station, which is to make it more attractive and convenient for our users. Placing an Aqua water station under the apartment can help people drink more water, be healthier and save the earth. Our station can be extended to office environment and school.

Task 2d Video Reflection: Designing for life (Episode 1)


This video is very interesting which is talking about the designs around our life. The designer Philippe Starck in the video express what is a good design and how designs effects our daily life and future.

Philippe Starck is a famous french product designer. He designs range form interior designs to mass product consumer goods such as chairs, toothbrushes and event houses.

In the video, his mission is to select the best new designer. through the process of selecting best designer, He test designer’s ability,creativity and vision. He believe that you make good design you should speak about life, sex, flesh and seat. His philosophy behind his style has always catered to the masses good looking but manufactured at a low cost.

This video gives me knowledge of how product designer effect every moment of our life. Also explain that when we look at products not just focus on the function we have to look at the story behind the product.

In the video he give a task to designers, he give three themes for them to choose which are Ecology(about sound and unsound), gender(about male quality and female) and function (about finding a product is useful,useless). The designer have to go the supermarket choose the product the meets the theme and explain why they choose it and what the story behind it and why people need it.

Video reflection : Home





This is very awesome video. Is a great educational program, it really open my eye. Also changed my view on the world. The video shows how beautiful the world that we are living in.




The video show the footage from over fifty countries, the views that most i have never seen. It teacher me the knowledge of awe about our planet and also the concern for the planet’s health. With in this film, the arthus hopes to provide a stepping stone to further to call, to action and to take care of our home.




Our home, it’s beautiful space that share for every living creature. We are all happing and enjoy what is the earth providing to us. Every wood and grass has its own life and has own function to help the living creature in the earth. We need them as well, the water, air, wood, grass ect are all supporting and giving a better life for us. I am very fortunate that what we all having in the the earth.




However, the people’s hearts are more and more greedy, they feels like never satisfied so they trying to get what they want inside the earth. People sart to cutting down trees to made paper, developing oil fields to produce products for daily life,occupy more lands to build houses.




Because of people’s greedy the world’s pollution havs increase a lot. Now we are living in exceptional times. In the video scientists tell us that we have 10 years to change the way we live, to avert the depletion of natural resources and the catastrophic evolution of the earth’s climate. Now is time for us to protect our home, no more destroy the world. as a industrial design i realise that we can help the world, we have to design the things that changing people’s bad behaviours, more environment friendly and encourage them to build and create more beautiful world that living.

assigment 2 conceps

Our chosen sector is food. We have the following three concepts:

Concept 1: Share baking appliances, bakeware

Problem identified:
1. Baking appliances and bakeware in the market are various and the usage time is short due to people's busy lifestyle.
2. Woman lived in apartment tend to be busy and have less baking experience. However, they enjoy baking at the weekend or party time.

Solution:
Provide a platform in apartment to let busy women borrow the baking appliances or bakeware instead of buying them. The target market is the busy working lady who live in apartment, they can also enrich baking experience through this platform and share their experience with people in this community.

benefits:
Consumer: buying less but experience more
Environment: Less products produced, less environmental impact
Provider: Make profit by customers' borrowing time, sustainable business model

Concept 2: Fresh juice delivery and packaging recycle
Problem identified:
1. Food packaging such as beverage packing, had great impact on the environment and need to be reduced.
2. As researched, There will be an increase in bottled beverage consumption in the household food consumption pattern.

Solution:
Juice company provide a fresh juice delivery service to household who participate in this system. Juice was locally produced and sent to household weekly. Household will replace their traditional beverage buying behavior to this fresh juice delivery pattern. The company also encourage consumers to collect their daily bottle package( which buy for a sudden thirsty in connivence), and give them when they delivered the juice to household. Customers will get discount for the amount of package they devoted.

Benefits:
1. Consumer: Get juice as they want and reduce package waste, get benefit for recycle it
2. Environment: Less packaging, Less transportation of package juice( shipping, trucking), support local farmer
3. Provider: Reduce environmental impact, reduce packing cost, improve brand loyalty

Concept 3: Smart food consumption and waste reduction
Problem identified:
1. Food service and household food losses occur because of overstocking, over preparation, plate waste, cooking losses and misunderstanding of quality defects and label interpretation(OECD,2002)
2. The reuse of household food waste and supermarket waste is low.
3. Agriculture have great impact on climate change, soil erosion is a big problem increased by chemical fertilizers. Local or small-holder farmer need link between supply chain.

Solution:
Supermarket provide service of recording what consumer buy from the supermarket( through barcode scan at the counter), and consumer can access these information by websites. Consumer can get information of their food stock at home, the expiry date and cooking suggestion at the websites. Consumer can give back the expired food back to the supermarket, supermarket will weight the food and give reward to the consumer by having discount of food. Supermarket will give the customer's food waste and their food waste(can't sell before expiry day) to local farmers. Farmers compost the food waste and use it as fertilizer. Food produced at the farm will go directly to the supermarket and sell to customer.

Benefits:
1. Consumer know what they consume and reduce over-consumption by knowing the food stock at home.
2. Supermarket gain brand loyalty of consumer and gain profit by reusing consumer's food waste.
3. Local farmers can link themselves to supply chain and use composting instead of chemical fertilizer.

Project one: design for disasters

Rationale

I am doing the Indonesian earthquake disaster. Before drawing the concept on this project, i do the research first. I look at the history of indonesia first. i want to understand more information about the country, such as what style they are, biology, what kinds of weather, life style and the economic income. Through the research i found that Indonesia is the world's largest rattan material and production and export countries. Indonesia's plywood, sawn timber, pulp, paper,wood products in the chinese market plays an important role.


After research the background of Indonesia, i focus on disaster which happen in the country see what kinds of product they need in the disaster situation, the information show that they mainly use tent, stretcher, radio and lighter. My design focus on what they really need. My concept is all abut stretcher.


I look at the existing product ,i found out that most of them use the material not environment friendly and the way of product package is not that convinced.


My design is foldable, easy assembly and easy to carry. my concept of the stretcher is design for rescue team people, it can carry at the back as a bag. which is to reduce the weight on the hand, when the stretcher carry at the back, hands will more relax and can carry other tools to rescue victims.


The weight of my product is 9 kg, the size is 200 x 55 x 15cm . The stretcher has 3 parts which can easy fold into one set. the material of product is aluminum alloy and hessian. my design has balance and protection function. i put myself as a victomes who is laying on the stretcher. i found the most import thing is want to be safe. The existing product most of them just flat, no anything protecting the side. there for i come up with the side handy can as a safety bar. this bar not just for holding on the side of the victom it also can unfold it down to extending the length , which is for the people who is over size. the reason i use aluminum alloy for handle/body bone is the material is light, strong and can be recycle.


I use hessian for the stretcher bed, this material is eco-friendly , easy to find in indonesia which can provide by own country. By using this material provide by local environment which can save lots of transport and can increase the economic for the whole country.


When making this product i been research of ergonomic on what way people will feel more comfortable. for the victim and the rescue people. Through the research i found the comfortable size of back carry is no bigger than people's hip size, it allows the arms move free. I have make lots of small model to test which will work the best.


overall, my design is make for people easy carry in difficult situation, easy store and clean. when the product is not use for earthquake it will place on the local hospital and surgery, it will have 5 of them in one red cross box hanging on the wall .

The way to clean the hessian is easy just brush out the dirty stuff and use water to wash it.


Reflection


This project is focus on material using and who is the target audience. Nows day product material use become more and more important, it affects our daily life. The manufactory want to have benefit form the consumer then product lots of unnecessary product and humming the environment. the pollution draws us attention. this project have guild me how to choose material for actual product.


My concept of this disaster project is stretcher that make form local environment which is Indonesia, and the material is environmental friendly. I choose hessian and aluminum alloy for the stretcher,reason is hessian easy found,easy recycle.


In this project i spend most of the time in testing the use ability, how can the design be small, light, easy use and not hum to environment. I have make lots of experience of how can this design work.


In the research of the material i found hard to found a suitable material that can use on my design. but finally i found one type can be use. in the being i feel this material not that good to use because the color of it, is so natural. but then i think a bit backward. yes we have to make stuff that good for environment or relate with eco. our topic is design for disaster which is to help people , help word there the material can't be hum to user or the environment.


Also this project teaches me how to understand clients need. By providing there need and have to consider of the cycle life of the product.


Actually i like this topic it gave knowledge of research and have challenge my ability of concept thinking and model making skills. with the concept i feels like never end. i feel happy of it, that means i am on the track as a design student we have to keep thinking.


Also i feel frustrate of making this concept because can't find the exactly material and so much details have to consider whether it proper to use or not. if have more time i will develop more of my concept to fit the disaster's need.

Task 2b:Sustainable consumption

Reflection : The story of electronics and Life psycle-ology




After watching short video of "Life psycle-ology" and "The story of electronics",it gives me good understanding of how the e-product's made and seriously effecting our daily life and the environment. In another hand these two video shows how evil the manufacturer just focus on profits and not considering the impact of worker, consumer and the environment.


In the video "the story of electronics" it tells how the design is toxic for the people and the planet. Usually i will buy new stuff when the market advertise new attractive product which it draws my attention or some time when the old one is no long to use, when these product get old i throw them into garbage bin, i never think about how waste i am and never know how these throw away product end up to. But the video tells me the true, the way that i am doing is not correct, i shouldn't be attracted by the new product, i should consider more about do i really need it.


Also the video educated my knowledge of marketing. the manufacturer's key strategy for the company is to sale more, make the product thrown away quickly then they can make out of profit.


Today's electronics that we use every day (such as computers, cell phones, tv) are hard to upgrade, easy to break and impractical to repair. also the manufacturer's using lots of toxic chemicals to produce the product such as pvc, mercury, solvents and flame retardants which these chemical will harm to the worker health and environment. the impact of these product is end up become the mountains of e-waste. the impact report shows that "each year we make 25 millon tons of e-waste which gets dumped,burned or recycled". How scary is that.


As an design student i think is the time to say no to "toxics in and toxics out". the most effective way to reduce the impact on the environment is to integrate environmental considerations into the product development process. to do this, we must consider the environmental impact of materials, energy and toxicity across an e-product's entire life cycle. we can make the product more modular, when one part broke can use new piece to repair, also can make product longer lasting, toxic free and can be recycle.

Task 3 Ecoredesign (Disassembly kettle)


The product that we disassembly is kettle. this product take us about 2 hours to speared in to parts. The hardest of this product is have to use many different fasteners to get the screws out.


In this exercise we identify the product materials and discusses the process of how the parts made. This kettle predominantly use material of polyproperly. The design of this product is simply,but there is challenge of hard to take out the heating system. Only this part it has 8 screws. After the disassembly we find out all the material of this product ended up have to go to landfill, nothing can be really recycle that is really waste.


The report from the greenfly shows that the part that has most environment impact is the heating system. (It took long time to separate it.) This result also shows that the design company didn't really consider about the environment when they design.


For redesign this product we can do better so don't have to waste that much. we consider to reduce the require of using fastener, there for most of the part can be use technique of self lock, in this way manufactory can reduce the cost of product and also can easy to get the product recycle which is more friendly for the environment.
